Aside from being what might be described as a first-world problem, “I got lobster guts all over my valuable painting” may be the oddest as­signment Emily Phil­lips has faced as an art conservator.

But the job’s not all crustacean-flesh removal. Pigments fade. Canvas tears. Paint becomes brittle and cracks or flakes. The years can be cruel to works of art, and careless stewardship even crueler. read more
