Most places have year-round farmers’ markets where folks can get fresh-from-the-earth produce and other deliciousness, but in my corner of the Adirondack Park it’s a four-month affair. My family and I plan our weekends around our Sunday trips to Marcy Field, between Keene and Keene Valley, where we stroll a makeshift runway lined with local farmers and artisans and nonprofits peddling their goods and messages. It’s also a social bonanza—we’ve all come out of hibernation and can’t help but bump into friends from nearby hamlets.
Market highlights for us include the Underwood Herbs table, where Jane Desotelle offers aromatic concoctions in teas and sachets and tinctures; Dick Crawford’s honey, beeswax products and display hive—Dick even wears antennae on his head; and the Fledging Crow Vegetables tent, where Ian Ater sells us our field greens. Ian’s one of the friendliest, most enthusiastic and fired up farmers you’ll ever meet. See for yourself by watching him and his Fledging Crow partner Lucas Christenson in Ben Stechschulte‘s Champlain Valley farms documentary Small Farms Rising. Or read “Fledging Crow,” an article about the guys and their Keeseville farm in the October 2010 issue of Adirondack Life.
Lucky for Adirondackers across the park there are markets in just about every pocket of this place. Listed here are dates, times and venues for some within the Blue Line, though it can’t hurt to call ahead before you venture out. Also, check Adirondack Harvest‘s website, the North Country clearinghouse for all things farmed, with details on specific farms and markets according to region.
