Portable landscapes from the Champlain Valley
When her now-teenaged twin sons were small, Jill Piper, of Willsboro, nurtured their outsize imaginations with lilliputian landscapes: as she worked in her gardens, they worked alongside, creating tiny worlds of their own. Those shared moments grew into Wee Garden, a line of nature-to-go scenes in teacups and other smallish antiques.
“It’s expressing yourself with plants, like painting with flowers,” says the art director turned photographer. Piper uses special-order moss and plants like hens and chicks, sedum, pennywort and fuchsia, as well as small-scale embellishments from the Neighborhood Nest (518-963-4652), an art and antique depot she owns with her mother, painter Barbara Page. Wee Gardens, ready- or custom-made, can be purchased at the Essex shop for $20 to $75; do-it-yourself kits, including miniatures and a starter book, are available for $35.
